the office goes concrete searching...we are making stuff with pre cast concrete and some béton thubs there reminds me of Manila's half pipe... Above is a project of Serôdio Furtado associados...we love concrete but we don´t understand why people insist on covering it with drywall and ceiling... that is probably the best phase of the building to us...we have to wait for it to turn into a ruin to see some core architectural values shine again...

Stubby is a word associated in surf craft world with scoop decks, blade rails, flex fins, smooth outlines on all round form...everyone following the saga knows the names: Greg Liddle, Klaus Jones, Brian Hilbers, Marc Andreini and a few others...not known for his hull displacement designs but instead by his longboard craft skills is French shaper Daniel Creignou. Me and Lob have been trading emails, google chats, beers, wines and a lot of design talk about surfboards for the past 3 years or so...on a few occasions he made the trip to PT. On one of those trips we got the chance to make the first Albatroz inspired out of a CC 9'6 glider...It is a 7'4 single fin pin tail with a pulled in nose,a pocket trimmer...it goes well in the pocket of the wave and still trims like a bigger board...

Than i started riding my 7'6 CC micro glider fish simmons inspired thing with 4 fins...love that board to death...one day i decided to go into Manila's shaping bay with a 8'0H and i came out( thanks again for the guidance António) with the second "Alba" like Kikas calls them. This second one was an attempt to have a wider pin tail with 4 fin hoping to see if it would stay closer with the pockect.

A few days ago, around 8 am Lob sends a googled olá with some pictures of the 3rd albatroz...a diferent take over the outline of the 1st...

I have been following Chris's trim project since its creation. I'm amazed how good his skills are coming along...not a small feat for someone living in Austria!
His latest creation is along the lines of what currently is interesting me in surfboard design and water time.

The more i look at that outline the more i think that if i used my liddle hull tail curve with some of my CC's gliders curves it will end up a close mash up. Trim is in that outline undoubtedly!

The 8'0H rocker lends itself to a nice flowing line!STOKED!
P.S.:Thanks Chris for the lending me the Jim Philipps shaping DVDs , he is truly a "genius"

Têm sido umas semanas intensas e cheias de trabalho...mas por vezes este proporciona agradáveis surpresas, como a oportunidade de ir à "linha" e Cascais este fim de semana. Esquece-se Carcavelos e inspecciona-se outros spots mais à frente com pouco crowd e a imitar, por vezes bem, point breaks!
(Re)descobrem-se alguns edíficios.
As refeições servem-se em pequenas tascas de pátio: choco a moda de Setubal, e, peito de frango recheado com farinheira e maçã! Suaves brancos maduros da península a sul regam a tertúlia em dia de trabalho.
Agora é esperar que esta sulada mexa com os fundos da praia de todos os dias e nos faça esquecer as semanas de miséria que passaram!

Já o mencionei algures por aqui, a minha primeira fish foi uma DVS( Dick Van Straalen) twin keel fish. Tive de implorar ao "Gonzo" que me a vendesse há 4 anos atrás. Partiu ao meio poucos meses depois. Ainda a arranjei e surfei durante uns outros tantos, mas acabei por a vender.
O Paulo ainda guarda religiosamente a sua azul que vai servir de base para um próximo projecto em foam...em especial o "reverse" v!

MY first fish was a DVS twin keel. My friend Paulo still has his blue and it is going to be the basis for a future foam project...specially the reverse V!

Após um ano sem um único rombo numa prancha a Albatroz#2 quebrou esse recorde...já está a ser reparada...mais feedback no comportamento daqui a alguns dias...mas estou muito entusiasmado com a forma como ela mantém o "trim" de uma prancha grande( dá para uns cross steps qd está agarrada na parede inclusivé!) e curva como se fosse mais pequena...

After one year free of dings and holes on boards this 2ndAlbatroz broke that record. Already in repairs so more feedback in a few days...so far i love how that it trims like a bigger board and turns like a smaller one...

Esteve um dia agradável,mas talvez houvesse melhor praia para ir. Não há muito stress se surfamos cedo em Matosas, mas num dia como este a partir das 10 h da manhã parece um circo de acrobacias aquáticas.
It was a nice day and surf for the dawnpatrol guys( me included). But after 10am on a morning like this Matosas beach turns to a display of a aquatic circus stunts.

Resta-nos a consolação que o nosso quase point de esquerda está de novo a funcionar( a nós goofys, lol)!

Os putos são ok( the kids are allright), bom mais ou menos estão sempre tentar dar a volta...aquele ritmo já não é o meu...sim, a idade e a gula já não perdoam.

O Gonzo da surfcenter na sua 4 fin fish num break local . Há 4 anos tive que lhe implorar que me vendesse a primeira fish( que ele planeava em guardar) que recebeu na Loja, era uma DVS twin keel amarela semelhante à que o Rastovich usa por vezes. Foi a minha primeira prancha do género.

Um bom fim de semana de surf...entre sessões uns feijões doces com sauerkraut de couve roxa e pimento vermelho regados com umas belgas...inspiração em alguns filmes como o OCD e o Believe( a imagem do rastovich é tirada de um destes)...alguém num comentário mencionou a minha obecessão com fins...bem este fim de semana estive impossível nas refeições com a minha conversa sobre a última experiência com este dois flex fins...

Great weekend, good swell, good waves... in between the sessions we cooked some sweet beans with beef, red cabbage sauerkraut and red peppers, drunk some belgian beers, and watch the OCD and the Believe movie from down under for inspiration( D.Rastovich turn)...someone mentioned my obsession with fins...so needless to say that fin talk was all over the dinner table...been testing a fun thing: same template and size , same flex pattern, but different thickness ....tried this weekend both in 2 boards: a 6'10 Liddle hull, and a 7'4 Alba...Greg's fin is easier to push and make it flex...i think that fin was re-foiled by Greg from his TA standard and it makes a huge different...

Existem muitos e bons shapers em Portugal. Não é díficil encontrar fishes, longboards pesados ao gosto dos 60's, single fins, eggs, coisas do tipo bonzers, e outros designs ainda menos correntes. Este não era o panorama hà 4 anos atrás, e hoje não só temos disponíveis estas alternativas para nosso desfrute aquático, como o desenvolvimento delas é genuíno e interessado.
Nos últimos meses tenho visto o Manila desenvolver em foam os bottoms a la bonzer. Há mais de um ano que ele os faz , mas de certo que a estadia na Madeira este ano com o Malcom Campbell lhe aguçou o engenho...a singularidade da sua proposta reside no desenvolvimento de "shortboarding bonzers" . so i emailed Ian who designs his 4 fins fishes around this set up and got
this reply:

"I spent the weekend at Jimmys( Jim Robertson from LOKBOX) and I
tried to pick his brain regarding the 757 fins.
Theres not much history and theory behind them that we could find.
It was used for a quad setup back in the 80s in Australia and Hawaii.
U remember how these things felt, lots of hold in the bottom and release
of the top,a  really fast and maneuverable fin.  
This will be my main fin for the double wing fishes I make.
All of them will have a standard single concave deck too."

De entre os vários shapes que o Ian faz uns amigos escolheram este 2+1 para seu deleito conspirador....é uma prancha que inevitavelmente traz á mente as stubbies do MP no filme Morning of the Earth , a drifta do Terry Fitzgerald com as suas inspiradas sessões em J-Bay no ínicio do anos 80 ,e as mais recentes sessões de Neal Purchase Jr. no filme Glass Love de A. Kidman...
Outline largo e curto( 5'8 a 6'2), slope rails, o já habitual duplo côncavo a canalizar a água pelos fins, algum V em partes estratégicas, e um rocker suave....Segundo o Ian este design têm um down the line speed semelhante a uma fish mas com un fin central com algum rake(projecção do tip do fin em relação á base) faz uns loucos cutbacks e bottom turns...mal podemos esperar!

O Paulo da Surfcenter na passada sexta feira organizou um pequeno evento informal para celebrar a entrega de novas pranchas shapadas pelo Manila para a Loja...

o entusiasmo de ambos é evidente...as pranchas impresionam tanto no shape como acabamentos!

não sou muito fã de acid swirls mas esta twin vermelha é mesmo um rebuçado que abre a gula

os bottoms estavam no ponto.....

foram bons momentos a falar de algo que gostamos muito: fishes!!!!!!!!

Miguel Abarca, a Spanish guy from Asturias has now the chance to slide with a CC quad through us...On the Colour card of the order for a Chris Christenson quad fish he said:" do something along the Asturian flag" ( a country within spain)...this what we did for him: Asturian blue Lamination ( via the SILVERBACK) and LOKBOX Asturian yellow LB´s quad set fins.

Well Miranda is himself a case study for the high specialized scientists on human
behaviour...but this weekend we just tested the limits of the so claimed flex of the contemporary wetsuit...Metralha got some rides on the yellow fish....and the hull proved again to be a good board on beach breaks...all weekend was around the Aveiro Area...and Miranda flowing on sk8 at the Manila Playground.

A NK é um esforço conjunto de criar uma plataforma, uma conspiração em torno de alguns shapes que nos entusiasmam e que gostamos de dissiminar... assim fizemos algumas NK que são a materialização deste gozo... elas infectaram alguns amigos com o vício de deslizar com 4 fins, keels, e 5 fins... outlines mais paralelos que os normais...fishes com os wide pin to pin... Pranchas convertidas em 5 fins apartir de cozinhas etcs...O Gualter, o Nuno, o Eloi, o Nicolas, o Kikas transformaram-se num pequena armada de conspiradores e cúmplices...
O Chris Christenson faz dos mais interesantes shapes que existem. Tivemos o prazer de partilhar umas ondas com ele e as suas pranchas... isto levou-nos a encontrar uma forma com que outros tivessem acesso a tal gozo. Quando se proporcionou a oportunidade de deslizar com umas 100% hand shape Kustom CC´s não hesitamos em correr a milha extra necessária para que esta aventura chegasse a bom porto...
O Eloi teve o privelégio de conhecer o CC, a equipa que laminou as pranchas, e levou o Chris a aprender a escrever obrigado...
O seguinte post expõem o stoke que nos motiva, o sorriso de orelha a orelha do Eloi é tão importante como o stoke que estas pranchas nos dão sobre o meio aquático...

Sebastien" chacal" a french glasser that on this trip is doing the sanding and polishing... Helder "tropa"Portuguese glasser/sander helping on some glass on fin sanding and other small stuff... and you can bet that were there is some cool surfboard stuff in Europe Mr. Barrel ( LOB) from barrel surfboards is always there...Manila factory owner and the man behind the MSD portuguese surfboards has let us use and abuse his space...more to come!!!!!!

Last Month i went to visit my brother who works and lives in NY.

I even got the chance to surf in the freezing water (8ºC) of Lincoln Beach and learned to longskate in the NY Streets.

Há alguns dias atrás, recebi do Dolce um conjunto de fotografias em que estou a surfar com a minha Pavel azul 5´10" Speed Dialer.
A few days ago i received from Dolce a batch of fotos of me surfing with my blue 5´10" Pavel Speed Dialer.

Elas foram tiradas faz hoje um ano, e, uns amigos depois da surfada matinal interrogaram-me sobre a experiência que tem sido a nereuskinesis...
They were captured exactly one year ago , and today some friends after an early morning session asked me some questions about the ride that has been the nereuskinesis experience...

...e tudo o que me veio à mente foi esta prancha... ela impulsionou toda esta aventura. O stoke que esta prancha provocou tanto em mim como no Alexandro conduz a nereuskinesis ...
All that came to my mind was the stoke both me and Alexandro got from this sled... it drives the nereuskinesis ...
